-- TEAM Airbike single seat ultralight / experimental aircraft by Jordan Lake Aero. The Air-Bike LS is the exact airplane designed by Wayne Ison in 1995.
The Airbike features a welded 4130 chromeoly steel fuselage. The wings are constructed of wood. The wings and tail are covered in standard fabric covering materials.
The Airbike is a light, sturdy single seat ultralight style aircraft with no bad habits. It is equipped with standard three axis stick and rudder controls in a taildragger configuration.
The single seat Airbike was designed to meet the requirements of the United States FAR 103 Ultralight Vehicles, including the maximum 254 lb empty weight, when flown with a 28 hp Rotax 277 or the 22 hp Zenoah G-25.
The name Airbike comes from the narrow fuselage design with the pilot's feet resting on rudder pedals on the outside of the fuselage.

OK... we gotta tell you... this one was one of the best speeches we have EVER heard at any aviation event... and it occurred this year at the 2012 AEA Convention and Tradeshow.
The kind folks of Universal Avionics pulled off quite a coup and arranged for a truly inspiring speaker for one of the most important gatherings in all of aviation -- the opening ceremonies of the 55th Annual AEA International Convention and Trade Show. And Universal's choice knocked it out of the park. Former Air Force One Command Pilot Colonel (ret) Mark W. Tillman, the United States' 12th Presidential Pilot, served as Commander of Air Force One from 2001-2009.
Col. Tillman was at the controls of Air Force One on September 11, 2001, keeping President Bush out of harm's way and connecting the flying oval office to the nation's first responders. He was also the first pilot to fly the Commander-in-Chief into a war zone. The challenge was unprecedented -- it was a "Zero Fail Mission".
A truly amazing aviator, in 2004 Tillman was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was also promoted to brigadier general by the President of the United States -- the first military line officer to receive this honor (not confirmed by the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee). One of his more extraordinary adventures took place as he became the first pilot to fly the commander in chief into Baghdad. The challenge was unprecedented -- safely transport the most targeted man in the world into the heart of terrorism. One mistake would have left the president vulnerable to attack and would have cost the lives of U.S. service members. Tillman personally orchestrated and executed this covert operation with flawless success. His planning, done entirely in secrecy, allowed for a complete surprise to the world.

All over the world, electric airplanes are getting remarkable amounts of attention, deservedly so as an exciting development to match work in cars and other vehicles.
These days, while drones (also called UAVs, UASs, or RPVs) are made in various countries, a lot of the development comes from China ... so why be surprised to hear of a positive development in a Chinese human-occupied aircraft?
Is it the first "certified" electric? Well, "certified" is a term that can be challenging to define as the word means different things in different countries. For example, we've already produced a video covering the American-designed, Chinese-developed eSpyder from Yuneec.
It won German approval in 2013. My flying experience on eSpyder is documented in this article. You can also read a more encompassing electric aircraft review article from 2011, though with the rapid pace of development such articles become dated rather quickly.
eSpyder developer Yuneec has also worked extensively on their e430, a two-seat, motorglider-like, pure-electric aircraft. Perhaps that was China's first electric two seater but now consider the Rui Xiang RX1E, a high-wing, side-by-side two-place aircraft. As does Yuneec's e430, RX1E uses high wing cantilever construction and long slender wings.
According to Cafe Foundation β€” the group that closely monitors electric aircraft developments and hosts professional symposia β€” RX1E has been "designed by the Liaoning General Aviation Institute while Shenyang Aircraft Manufacturing [of Cessna Skycatcher fame] manufactures the aircraft under the Rui Xiang General name." Cafe Foundation gathered some of their facts from China News Service.
Cafe continued their report writing that RX1E is "...made of carbon fiber composite material, uses a 10 kilowatt-hour lithium battery [that is] enough for a 40-minute flight. Charging takes one-and-a-half hours and restores enough energy to make a 40-minute flight, all for about 5 yuan (80 cents).
Cafe credited Xinhua News Agency, which reported "a maximum cruising speed of up to 150 kilometers per hour (93 mph or 80 knots), and the ability to climb to 3,000 meters (10,800 feet) at a maximum takeoff weight of 480 kilograms (1,056 pounds)." RX1E is said to have a takeoff distance of 290 meters (930 feet), and a landing distance (probably over a barrier) of 560 meters (1,792 feet). Power is supplied by a 30 kW (40 hp) Sineton electric motor.
Last fall our good friend Mary Grady writing for AVweb reported that RX1E "production is expected to begin in the first half of 2015, according to China Daily. The plant will be capable of producing up to 100 airplanes per year." AVweb's report continued quoting Yang Fengtian of Shenyang Aerospace University, "The plant will be capable of manufacturing up to 100 airplanes per year within three years," said Yang. Drawing from other sources, the AVweb article stated, "The aircraft will fly about 90 minutes on a full charge," at a cost of about one dollar. "Cruising speed is about 86 knots. The price is expected to be about $163,000."

Frank Robinson Discusses the Company's Latest Heli Evolution

At the 2010 Heli-Expo, Frank Robinson updated an enthusiastic crowd on the much-anticipated R66 turbine helicopter. Expo attendees had the opportunity to get an up-close look at the five-place helicopter on display. Though few specifics were released due to ongoing research and development, Robinson confirmed several significant details including base price and performance specifications; customers can purchase the standard-equipped R66 at $770,000.

Launched in 2007, the R66 features many of the same design components as its predecessor, the R44, including a two-bladed rotor system, T-bar cyclic, and an open interior cabin configuration. Robinson, however, expects the R66 to be "a little bit smoother, a little bit quieter, and a little bit faster than the R44." Most notably, the R66 features an increased reserve power and altitude performance. Preliminary test data indicates a 120kts cruise speed capability and an approximate 325nm maximum range. The new helicopter will also offer a haul capacity of 927lbs with maximum fuel.

Robinson expressed optimism that the FAA certification process is nearly complete. The company is now accepting $75,000 non-refundable deposits; however, until the certification has been finalized, serial numbers will not be assigned and delivery dates will not be confirmed. Robinson estimates production will start at about two aircraft per week.
